The Murawin/Batiba Guwiyal Armidale team hosted a beautiful Family Matters event supported by AbSec last weekend. Instead of having the traditional morning tea, we focused on a cultural theme to which both adults and children participated together through activities and yarning on subjects of building strong community, keeping our children safe and issues concerning families. We enjoyed some beautiful food which included both sweet and savory, employing a few local women to do the catering and help set up the event.
The event was held at Narwan Village community garden in Armidale, and over 30 people came along, with Hazel Vale and Bevan Quinlan facilitating the day. Activities for the children included rock painting and games. The event helped bring together community and create awareness of the importance of building a safe and strong community. Together we discussed the issues of family violence and the high rate of our children being taken from family and community because of violence and sexual abuse. Overall, the event was a great community day and we look forward to the 2019 Family Matters Week.
